Getting Game Based learning into your classroom

This workshop is designed to use research supported game based and gamification learning into class-rooms across the content areas. Game based learning and gamification leverages student interest in problem solving and uses project based learning.

Participants will learn how to use game based learning and gamification to integrate this into their classrooms in order to increase student engagement.

In addition, we’ll be demonstrating real world problem solving and community based concerns.

PGP & PGE: The professional growth intersection

What is a Professional Growth Plan (PGP)? Who needs to complete one? How can PGPs be used for certificate renewal and salary advancement? How can I use my PGE work to satisfy the requirements for a PGP?

Participants will receive hands-on instruction and will actually complete most of your professional growth plan right at the workshop. This workshop will be useful for those who are required to complete PGPs for certificate renewal, and other teachers who wish to use them for clock hour salary advancement. Each PGP is worth 30 clock hours.

Learn how PGPs fit with the new STEM and TPEP professional development requirements for certificate renewal, and the role of PGPs in the Washington state certification landscape.

Creating a Culturally Responsive Classroom

As our classrooms welcome an increasingly diverse population of learners, educators need time to reflect on their practice as culturally responsive professionals to increase effectiveness across differences among their students and families.
Over the two nights, we will focus on:
• Integrating the cultural competency definition into educators' daily practice and classroom environment.
• Understanding the impact of resiliency in student growth by increasing relational strategies that focus on developing student resiliency as a primary factor in closing the opportunity / achievement gap.
• Using the cultural competency framework of awareness, understanding, skills, and advocacy to increase educator effectiveness with students from diverse populations including: socio-economic, language, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, gender, religion, age, and ability.
• Growing as a culturally responsive educator through reflective practice by increasing one's AWARENESS of self (biases, stereotypes, expectations) and KNOWLEDGE of other social group categories to which one does not belong.
Learn how to: build relationships, communicate in culturally responsive ways, cultivate a safe and inclusive environment, and engage with families and communities. Educators will receive resources and materials to support their classrooms.

Creating a Culturally Responsive Classroom 2.0 (Sections 3 & 4)

Last year, we offered the six-hour series (Sections 1 & 2) that introduced the concepts of culturally responsive classrooms and helped participants increase their effectiveness across differences among their students and families.
Over the next two sessions, we will focus on:
• Exploring practices to ensure that students experience a positive, consistent, safe, and equitable classroom with emphasis on positive social behavior development.
• Facilitating classroom interactions that appropriately integrate your students' culture and family backgrounds.
• Integrating culturally responsive behavior intervention practices into your classroom.
• Building concepts from earlier sessions to learn to implement positive behavior intervention strategies that respect all students.
Participants will receive resources and materials to support their culturally responsive classrooms.
Theses trainings are a collaboration between LWEA, WEA, and the University of Washington College of Education Faculty.

Taking Charge of Your Future - Pre-Retirement Seminar

LWEA is sponsoring this very popular pre-retirement seminar which is taught by WEA-Retired experts. This 10-hour class will help you get a better focus on this aspect of your life and be prepared to transition to retirement. The class is limited to 20 people (anyone retiring in 2018 has priority). National Board Renewal Jump Start

WEA's National Board Renewal Jump Start is a 1-day training that provides key information to NBCTs who are engaged in the National Board Certification renewal process. This training helps candidates consider their growth and experiences since becoming a NBCT and how to relate this to the renewal process. This training is sponsored by the Lake Washington Education Association (LWEA).
